What can I say? I guess I’m a little old school. When everyone and everything seems to be rocking the digital vibe, I’m digging around auctions looking for 100-year-old relics.
I like paper things. I love old photos and postcards, old books and magazines, old advertising. My favorite era is from the 1880s through the 1920s. For me, the idea that something I’ve got in my hands was held by someone else a century ago is like touching across time.
I wonder what the people in the photos were thinking when their picture was taken. Or how people reacted to an ad when they saw it. Or what’s revealed by the little things in the background that nobody at the time thought were important. All these years later, we have the clues, captured in images and words and notes. But what do those clues tell us?
I started this blog to share some of my thoughts about the interesting images I come across in my searches through auctions and estate sales. I also run an eBay store called Paper From The Past, where you can purchase original antique advertising and images, like the ones that are featured in the blog.
